For over five decades, BIT Mesra (located 16 kms from Ranchi, the Jharkhand state-capital)has been engaged in nurturing minds through a rich heritage of academic excellence. Essentially a hub of bustling student activities, the beautiful campus has been a second-home to thousands of students in their journey to challenge the times. Established in 1955 by the visionary-industrialist Mr. B.M. Birla, it is today one of the most premier engineering destinations in India.
BIT, Mesra is a “Deemed University” under Sec. 3 of the U.G.C. Act 1956. The Board of Governors is responsible for the main functions and overall supervision of activities. It comprises representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, The Chancellor, the AICTE, The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Shri C.K. Birla is the Chairman of the Board of Governors while the Governor of the state of Jharkhand officiates as the Institute’s Chancellor. There’s a Technical Council that decides the academic policy of the Institute.

The well-appointed campus facilities at BIT Mesra serve the manifold needs of BIT community life. It is accepted here that exploring the full potential of student life needs to incorporate parallel methods of learning with provision for complete self-expression.
BIT Mesra is a fully residential campus, providing accommodation to approx. 3200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 2000 members of the faculty and staff. The main building accommodates lecture halls, research and training laboratories, library, administrative offices etc. covering an area of 30,000 sq. mtrs while the workshop annexure has a covered area of 4,000 sq. mtrs. The laboratories and offices of the Department of Space Engineering & Rocketry comprise a sub-campus that is some distance away from the main building for reasons of security.
The Students Halls of Residence:
The Institute is completely residential with eleven hostels for boys and three separate ones for girls. All student lodging houses are spacious and beautifully laid out amidst a lot greenery
Each male-student is provided with well-furnished single-accommodation while girls share their accommodation in spacious and adequately furnished rooms. Individual rooms are constructed in a row with a wide veranda for common use running along the length of passage. Common facilities at the hostel include dining halls and common rooms with provision for several indoor games. The reading room in each hostel subscribes to a large number of magazines, periodicals and newspapers. The entertainment hall in each hostel has a colour television set. Each hostel has an independent mess, completely run and managed by the students themselves.
Other Facilities at the BIT Campus:
In addition to on-campus hostel arrangements, students have access to plenty of facilities for learning, recreation as well as sports activities within the grounds of BIT Mesra. The stately campus is self-contained in every sense with well-thought out provisions appointed for every need of the campus residents, be it the students, faculty or other staff members.
The BIT Central Library serves as a model of an evolving and dynamic facility in technical learning since 1955. The library, as an established knowledge hub that is conveniently accessible by those associated with the University, has a major contribution in making BIT an internationally top ranked Academic & Research driven institution.
The Library’s collection comprises hybrid resources (Print & Electronic) in the filed of science and technology, engineering, pharmacy, management and hotel management. The Library also has a separate Internet section consisting of a number of networked terminals for providing recent and most comprehensive access to online journals, online databases and other online reference resources to the faculty, students and staff under Intranet and Internet environment. The Central library has automated all its routine activities through library software called “LIBSYS” and also extended the scope of various services like CD-ROM database search, OPAC and Web based OPAC
The Central Computing Facility (CCF) forms an important component of the Institute’s infrastructure, providing a wide spectrum of services to the students as well as faculty and staff involved in research and other academic activities.
All students have various computer science papers in their courses. The CCF provides the support for them to have a hands-on feel of what they learn in the classrooms and enhance their computer skills. The CCF also supports research activities undertaken in the Institute.
The CCF comprises of seven laboratories (of the Department of CSE and the Department of IT) housing approximately 400 computers having the very latest configuration. The wide range of software includes C, C++, Java, Ora AutoCAD, MATLAB, Macromedia Flash, 3-D Studio Max, Photoshop, Prolog, LISP, Rational Rose, etc. All syste are networked and anyone occupying a terminal can access resources available on the network, barring security restrictions. Students also learn how to harness the capabilities of a network.
The present BIT Dispensary is 20 bedded including 8 bedded two isolation wards fully functional Health Care Centre providing facilities to BIT Students, Faculties, their families and staff members & their families plus Villagers around the Campus.
The Dispensary is functioning in all the 3 shifts (Round the clock 24×7) including Sunday & Holidays attending all OPD and IPD & Emergency Cases.
Presently it is manned by 5 Allopath & 1 Homeopath Doctor put in shift/General shift and about 20 paramedical staff. We have also Dentist, Physiotherapist, Eye, Skin, & Gynecologist as visiting specialist every week for health care service.
The Campus has a Shopping Complex and consists of the Co-operative Stores in addition to the stationery shop, tailoring units, cafeterias etc. These provide for the daily requirements of the campus of nearly 5,000 residents. The construction of a full-fledged Marketing Complex and Cooperative Book Store to meet the growing needs of the Campus has recently been complete
BIT campus life accommodates a prolific range of co-curricular activities as part of its daily routine. Apart from ensuring the physical well being of students, it is also essentially a way of life for BIT-ians and helps them come together on numerous occasions in a spirit of healthy rivalry and true sportsmanship. Whether it is a casual face-off between friends, intra-college championships or inter-college tournaments organised on a grand scale, students of BIT have proved their worth in the field of sports time and again.

The institute has many on going academic and research collaborations with different national and international universities, and industries. Its cutting-edge research is reflected in its exhaustive list of research projects, which cater to both our national needs and global developments. The Sponsored Research and Consultancy Cell (SRCC) co-ordinates and facilitates all research and development activities at the Institute.
