he motto of IIT Kharagpur is “Yoga Karmashu Kaushalam” . The motto literally translates to “Excellence in action is Yoga” essentially implying that doing your work well is (true) yoga. It is sourced to Sri Krishna’s discourse to Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita. This quote in its larger context of Gita urges man to acquire equanimity because such a soul endowed with the mind of equanimity allows him to shed the effects of his good and evil deeds in this world itself. Equanimity is the source of perfection in Karmic endeavors while leading to Salvation.

National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary organisation launched in Gandhiji’s birth centenary year, 1969. The program aims to promote personality development by means of participation in community service. Starting from a handful of 37 universities, today it has got more than 3.2 million student volunteers from all over the country. In IIT-KGP, NSS has been made a part of core academic curriculum for more than one-third of first and second year undergraduate students. The programme comprises of weekly field work and a minimum of one annual camp.
Our mission at the Counseling Center (CC) in IIT KGP is to promote the well being of our students and support them in getting the most out of their time in IIT Kharagpur. Our staff consists of clinical psychologists and mental health professionals. The Counseling Center offers a broad range of services including individual counseling, group therapy, as well as medication, assessment and management. In addition to these, CC provides a range of programs to promote mental health, emotional resilience and wellness throughout the campus community. Our counselors interact with students during orientation, conduct sensitization programs and theme-focused short-term group sessions in students Halls of Residence. The Counseling Center also runs a Gatekeepers Training Program for Student Coordinators to address suicide prevention and effectively deal with stressors on campus.
It takes more than a degree to induct college-graduates into the society and transform them into responsible citizens. And a lot more to recognise the potential in a student and make them realise the contemporary scenario. However, it all starts with a small step : mentor-ship from the experienced. In a survey of Fortune 500 companies, 96% of executives credited mentoring as an important developmental tool. 75% said mentoring played a key role in their career success. Who else could share a stronger bond with the students of an institute and guide them through the ground realities of the work-a-day world than the alumni of the institute?
Hence, the Office of Alumni Affairs, IIT Kharagpur, is looking forward to fostering and nurturing a Alumni Student “Mentorship Programme”, involving the alumni of IIT Kharagpur. The prototype of the proposed mentorship programme aims at a healthy interaction between an interested mentor and an eager protege. This programme matches the profiles of the applicant and the alumni based on common goals and career interest. The mentors would advice the protege on any sort of problems faced by them and would be able to provide information related to professional and career development. Issues related to career path, resumes, course selection, international perspectives and work/family could be discussed with the mentors. The students have the opportunity to remain in contact with the mentors even after graduating.
