Government Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur is affiliated to Department of Science and Tehnology, Govt. of Bihar, and approved by AICTE has been par excellence in technical education. The primary objective of the institution is to promote education and research in the field of technology and to replenish the skills that get lurked in the budding technocrats. Each and every member in the institution pushes themselves to the institution to set as an example.
Founded in 1923 in an area of 10 acres of land as Tirhut Technical Institute imparting Journeyman’s training course. Subsequently Journeyman’s course was closed and diploma in Engineering teaching started in 1949 with a total intake of 60. In the expansion scheme of 1960-61, the intake was increased to 180(C+M+E) each of 60 nos. and the Institution was renamed as Government Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur. Principal’s residence in an area of about an Acre just away 1 km from the institution. The hostel of the institution is situated about 2km, from the institution in Gannipur area in about 5 1/2 acres of land.
Situated in Muzaffarpur very close the first republic on ‘Vaishali’ (also known as the Holy place of Lord Buddha and Mahavir and an International Tourist place), a area of immense scenic beauty. The college is located hardly 1kms from Muzaffarpur Railway Junction. As well as from State Transport Depot. One can reach the institution by air too; it is about 7km from there. There are plenty of bus services from every corner of Bihar as well as Bengal. It is centrally located and be approached Rail directly from every corner of India.

Hostel for students of Govt. Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur is situated some km. from from the main Institute building. It has plenty of open space around the building.
Another hostel specially for girl’s is also in process of construction.
Government Polytechnic Hostel consists of Ground plus one storey. Each of the floors consists many occupancy rooms for the students. The Hostel can accommodate around 100 students. And projected girl�s hostel will be constructed with capacity of 100 students.
The criteria for admission to the Hostel are based on Merit Basis. Some seats are reserved for students belonging to SC / ST / OBC / Persons with Disability.
Career After College:
Training and Placement Cell in the Govt. Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur plays a vital role and is becoming a key department of the institute. As there are large numbers of Engineering and Management colleges coming up in Bihar, the competition for employment is increasing every day and the job of placement is becoming a challenging one.A full pledged placement cell is functioning in our college with a full time placement officer. Our Training and Placement Office is performing the following activities:

Inviting various organization for campus recruitment.
The Training & placement Cell is commited to provide all possible assistance to its students in their efforts to find employment. The Training & Placement service operates year round to facilitate contacts between companies and graduates. Staffs are available to respond to student’s question and concern of all kinds. This may include advice on placement procedures help with preparation of applications and resumes and practice for interviews. The aim is to ensure that students have the information and skills necessary for an effective job search. Those considering careers in education or in related fields are offered detailed career guidance at the Training &Placement Cell. All advice is based on up-to-date placement statistics and an envisioned view of future and educational and industrial trends. Every efforts is undertaken to create opportunities for our students to get placements. We hope to reach maximum placements level in the years to come.
Internal Revenue Generation:
For the sustenance of the system, it is all the more necessary to provide suitable budgetary support to give further impetus to the activities.
Since Govt. is facing a resource crunch due to various developmental activities and other unavoidable expenditure, which may ultimately result in slowing down the pace of further expansion of Technical Education in the State. Moreover a very inadequate amount is allocated for Training expenditure, Machinery/ Equipment, Operation & Maintenance, Office Expenses and training material as compared to staff salary in the Annual Plan/ Non-Plan budget of the department.
Keeping in view the above aspects the department proposes to launch the I.R.G. Scheme with the combined efforts of the Institute, faculty and staff. State Govt. has taken a decision to implement the scheme at Govt. Polytechnic on experimental basis.

Community Development Through Polytechnics:
The ministry of Human Resource Development ( MHRD )Government of India is implementing the scheme with well- defined objective of ensure for the rural society a fortune of benefits from the investments in the technical education system. The CDTP program helps to spread science and technology applications in rural owns and generate self and wage employment opportunities through non-formal training towards competency and need based courses in various trades or multiple skills. Youth Women and other backward groups can benefit from the employable skill there by acquired.
Apart from this, this scheme also provides technical education, help, services and community services to weaker section, backward classes and minority classes, which can not obtain such training programs or not aware of technology to help them for self employment or employment.

Sports section at Govt. Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur provides opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to participate in a variety of sports and recreational activities. Since students develop and organize their own teams for various games, they have the opportunity to demonstrate and develop their leadership and decision making skills.
