Government Polytechnic Nirsa, Dhanbad, formerly Mining Institute, Dhanbad was established in the year 1958 by the state govt. to cater the needs of mining and mineral industries in respect of technicians and supervisors. As North Chhotanagpur division particularly Dhanbad and Giridih, predominately mines and mineral rich region of undivided Bihar, has a large number of Coal Companies.Dhanbad having better communication facilities has been selected for setting up of this institute, although one Mining Institute namely Mining Institute Bhaga was there in this region.Initially, this institute has only one branch of Engineering namely Mining.
Initially, this institute has only one branch of Engineering namely Mining. As such it has got lesser attention of the state govt. while implementing strengthening of polytechnics project under the world bank assistance in mid – nineties. However Civil works like new instruction building, residential quarters and water supply system were built under this project. Also a new branch of engineering namely Open Cast Mining was also sanctioned for this institute which was letter on closed on account of statutory considerations.
In 1999 – 2000, like other institute, IT branch for this institute too was sanctioned. However before sanction neither the post of faculty and technical supporting staffs nor requisite infrastructure facilities required to run the program were created.
In the year 2006 – 2007, three more branches of engineering namely computer Science Engg., Civil and Mechanical were sanctioned under the same condition as stated is preceding Para. However at present the sanction of I.T. and Computer Science branches did not get extension from AICTE. Presently AICTE approved courses in the streams of Mining, Mechanical and Civil engineering are running in this institute.

Registration Fee:
1.Each Student has to pay an amount of Rs. 350/-. Students of all category have to pay this amount.
2.Registration fee is applicable only in 1st Semester. Those students selected under Lateral Entry have to submit registration fee along with proper field registration form in 3rd semester/2nd year.
3.Registration fee may be change as per direction of SBTE, Ranchi.
Examination Fee:
1.All students have to pay an amount of Rs. 750/- for each semester exam. Examination fee may changed as per direction of SBTE, Ranchi.
Hostel Fee:
1.All students residing in hostel have to pay Rs. 71/- per month.
1. Admission
a.The number of seats in each branch of diploma programme for which admission is to be made will be decided by AICTE.
b.Admission to all courses will be made in odd semester of each session. At the first year level, a polytechnic entrance examination is conducted by JCECE Board, Ranchi for selection of students. Details of rules of polytechnic entrance examination of JCECEB are available in information brochure published by JCECEB every year.
2. Registration
a.After the Admission, registration of each student is compulsory.
b.Each student has to submit the attested copy of allotment letter in the registration cell, issued to him/her by JCECEB for registration.
c.Each students has to submit the photo copy of passing certificate of 10th exam.
d.Student should have to affix those photo graph submitted by him/her the time of counseling in the office of JCECEB, Ranchi on the registration form.
e.Any change in the name or fathers name is not allowed to students after registration.
f.Registration certificate issued by SBTE, Ranchi is an important document. Therefore all students have to keep it and preserve it in original format. For details visit the Web site of SBTE, Jharkhand.
3. Attendance
a.Students are required to attend all the classes (Lecturers, Tutorial, laboratories Practical, Workshops, field work, vocational training) for which they have been registered.
b.Students are also required to participate the community development program and other social activities, designed by the institute.
c.Each students has to submit the photo copy of passing certificate of 10th exam.
d.A student will be debarred from appearing in an examination if his/her attendance falls below 75 percent.
e.If the period of leave is for a short duration (less than two weeks), prior application for leave shall have to be submitted to the head of the department concerned.

a.Student shall conduct themselves within and outside the premises of the institute in a manner befitting the students of an institute of national importance.
b.Ragging in any form is banned: acts or ragging will be considered as gross indiscipline and will be severely dealt with.
c.The following acts of omission and/or commission shall constitute gross violation of the code of conduct and are liable to invoke disciplinary measures.
