The Indian Institute of Carpet Technology popularly known as IICT, the only of its kind in Asia, has been set up by Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India to provide much needed support to Textile, Carpet and allied Industries. The Institute is affiliated to U.P. Technical University. Lucknow and is approved by A.I.C.T.E. The institute is also a member of I.S.T.E. and CII and recognized by Textile Institute, Manchester, UK. The main thrust areas of the Institute are A) Human Resource Development B) Design Creation and Development, C) Research & Development and D) Technical Support Services to the Industry.
The Institute is located in Bhadohi, which is 45 Kms away from Holy City Varanasi and 75 Kms from Allahabad. The campus of IICT is about 4 Kms from Bhadohi Railway Station located at the outskirts of Bhadohi town on Varanasi- Bhadohi Main Road and is free from pollution providing a peaceful atmosphere for studies and research. The campus is spread over 10 acres of land comprising of State of the art Administrative building with space for Classrooms, Laboratories including Computer lab with own V-SAT facility, Conference Hall, Library, Design Studio, Museum and Workshop. The campus is equipped with facilities like Residential accommodation for employees, Open Air Theatre for performing Cultural Activities, Open space for Games, Water supply and Generator system with 24 hours backup.

The Institute started functioning from 2001 and at present is running B. Tech. Course in Carpet & Textile Technology. The 2nd batch of the B.Tech has already passed out during the year 2006 and everybody has been suitably placed in the Industry (both in Carpet & Textile Industry). Besides, B.Tech course, the Institute is running Industry Based Short Term Training Courses in Design, Dyeing and Computer Application & Management. In collaboration with Canesis Network Ltd., New Zealand our Institute offers Distance Learning Programme in Wool/Carpet/Textiles. The Institute has extended its existing B.Tech course providing scope for additional disciplines- Home Textile Technology and Textile Design Technology as a specialization in the final year with intake of 60.
The Institute is equipped with latest machines, plants, looms and other infrastructure for running the courses. The Institute is awarded coveted ISO 9001:2000 in the year 2005 by SGS, U.K. The IICT’s Laboratory has also been accredited by NABL.
The first & 2nd batch of the B.Tech passed out during the year 2005 & 2006 respectively has been suitably placed in the Industry (both in Carpet & Textile Industry).
The third batch who are scheduled to pass out by July’2007, all students are either placed or offered job through Campus placement procedure.

Snehabha is a New Carpet Backing concept involving use of polymer sheet which can be fixed at the back with or without third backing. The backing of Handtufted Carpet using this new substitution technique Invented by Prof. (Dr.) Kamal Kanti

technology (IICT) Bhadohi is available for adoption by industry.Handtufted Carpets are backed using two series of
fabrics and two tier latexing followed by drying etc.The process has been of time consumption, drudgery and non ecofriendly.Industry therefore needed cost effective substitution for which IICT could devise a system. The system relates to “new polymer sheet and method of backing carpet or such thick fabric material with the polymer sheet” .
