Jiwaji University Gwalior came into existence on May 23, 1964, through M.P. Govt. Ordinance no. 15 of 1963. Late Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, laid the foundation stone on 11th December 1964 at a sprawling campus of over 225 acres of land at Naulakha Parade ground. This was a generous contribution of Scindia family, in particular Kailashwasi Maharaja Shrimant Jiwaji Rao Scindia and late Rajmata Shrimati Vijayaraje Scindia. The institution was christened after the name of Kailashwasi Shrimant Jiwajirao Scindia as a standing memorial to his persona. The motto of the university is embedded in its logo Vidyaya Prapyate Tejah.

The University central Library has a collection of over 1,40,000 books and about 8000 bound volumes of research journals. It also contains a section of unpublished theses. Presently more than 142 Indian and Foreign journals are being subscribed. The Library also contains Internet access, microfilm reader, 16-mm projector, and a number of films on various subjects. Beside Central library, each School of Studies has a library, well equipped with books and journals, useful for advanced study.
The collected information material has been organized discipline wise in multistoried stacks for open access of the users. One separate reading cum reference room is established in big hall furnished with latest reading and information materials. Besides this central library also extends its services in the form of school of studies library unit having a good number of information materials, educational aids & equipments. All schools of studies have their own collection of approximately 1 lakh volume of books and other informational materials.
The University has established it self as a leading centre in sports in the region and is presently catering to the sports need of Children, Youths and old People of Greater Gwalior by organising regular Yogic classes and scientific coaching camps in different games and sports. The Sports Complex has got two floodlight basketball courts with portable uprights, three floodlight tennis courts, four vollyball courts (caged) one hockey ground, one grassy football ground, standard cricket groud with turf wicket, one Kho-Kho, two Kabaddi, one Handball, one Indoor hall for Table Tennis, Judo, Aerobic, Badminton, Wrestling and Weight Lifting and a 400 m. grassy track. The sports complex of university is named as Mahadji Scindia Sports Complex.
The Computer Centre was established in 1988 under able guidance of the then Vice-chancellor Dr. K.K. Tiwari. It was formely opened by his Excellency Prof. K.M. Chandi, the then governor of Madhya Pradesh on the auspicious day 28 February 1988. In the beginning this Centre was equipped with the Main Frame ICIM 6000. The furnishing of the centre was also of latest type and the same was done by the ICIM agency. This centre was one of the best centres of this part of the country. The first course launched by the centre was Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application, which was later on converted into MCA. The pass out of this course could obtain good placement in various organisations.
Computer Centre was established for the purpose of providing central computing facility to university teaching departments and research activities. Another objective of the centre was to computerize various activities of the university in order to provide better services to the students. Since its establishment center has performed various tasks assigned to it satisfactorily. The centre is also equipped with Internet
Academically and socially very congenial environment is provided to all the students residing in the campus. The “Mrignayani Girls Hostel” and “Tatya Tope Girls Hostel” are situated within the campus. The hostels have all the required facilities with well furnished rooms. Appropriate security arrangements have also been made for these hostels. In view of the increasing strength of girl students, the existing accomodation is being extended to provide more rooms. One of the boys hostel named after Captain Roop Singh, a veteran hockey player is also located with in the campus to accommodate 150 students. Another boy’s hostel is Arya Bhatta Hostel, which is also well furnished with the Internet and other recreation facilities.
