National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training & Research (NITTTR), Kolkata was established in 1965 as Technical Teachers’ Training Institute (TTTI), Calcutta. This was the first among four such institutes (other three being at Chandigarh, Bhopal & Chennai) established by the Dept. of Education, MHRD, Govt. of India as fully centrally funded autonomous institutions for providing pre & in-service training to the teachers and staff of Degree and Diploma level training institutions and also for conducting various activities related to quality improvement of the technical education system of the country. The Govt of India, in 2003, accorded national status to this institute, (along with the three sister institutes) in recognition of the contribution of these institutes for the expert service rendered for overall improvement of quality of Technical Education System.
The focal activities of the institute are (i) Education & Shorte-term Training, (ii) Curriculum Development, (iii) Learning Resources Development, (iv) Research & Development and (v) Extension Services & Consultancy.
AICTE has recognized the Short-term training programmes conducted by the Institute for consideration for the purpose of movement to higher grades under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS).
The Institute is also offering three (3), AICTE approved, two year (four semester) Post Graduate Degree Programmes in Manufacturing Technology, Multimedia & Software Systems, and Mechatronics Engineering, leading to M.Tech Degree of West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT).
Some of the notable national level projects in which the Institute is associated are serving as Nodal agency to centrally sponsored Community Polytechnic Scheme; designing & conducting AICTE sponsored “Induction training Programme” for fresh teachers of engineering colleges and polytechnics; facilitating implementation of Centrally sponsored scheme for Integrating Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in the Mainstream of Technical & Vocational Education etc.

Short Term Training Programmes:
The Institute Conducts Short Term Training Programmes (STTPs) for in-service teachers and staff members of technical institutions, e.e., Polytechnics and Engineering Colleges all over India. These training programmes are spread over the entire academic year, i.e., from April 1 of every year to March 31 of the next calendar year.
In-House Trainng Programmes:
In addition to STTPs mentioned in the Programme calendar’s, the Institute also conduct clientele demand based STTPs of following categories.
Demand based training programmes are conducted in the campus of the client institutes with flexible duration according to convenience of the clients.
Special Trainng Programmes:
Tailor-made training Programmes/Workshops are conducted at the main campus or any one of the Extension Centres of the Institute at Bhubaneswar/Guwahati to cater to the special needs felt by the Directorates of Technical Education or organizations/ industry. Those interested are invited to send their demands.
Collaborative Training Programmes:
Such programmes will be conducted in collaboration with technical institutions / industries by sharing of resources. The Institute has organized such programmes in collaboration with national and international organizations like Colombo Plan Staff College, United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, United Nations Development Programme and various reputed technical institutions. The academic block of the Institute is within the main campus at Block FC, Sector III, Salt Lake City, Kolkata 700106. All academic departments, along with their class rooms, official chambers of the faculty members, laboratories, seminar room etc. are housed in two buildings. The apex hostel, executive hostel, and other hostels are within walking distance from the academic block. The Institute library too is situated in the same building.
Feel like home’ attitude prevails when NITTTR provides accommodation to the participants of Short Term Training Programmes. To cater this service one Executive Hostel and two numbers of Student Hostels are made functional inside the main campus. Few AC and non AC rooms in the hostels are made available for hire on first -come-first service.
The Executive Hostel has 24 numbers of AC and 16 numbers of Non AC rooms which can accommodate 80 numbers of participants. In addition to that Student Hostels can accommodate almost 100 numbers of student participants. M.Tech students are provided with single seated accommodation with fooding facilities in the student hostel.
The Library of National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research, Kolkata is on the 3rd floor of the New Building of this Institute so that trainees, M.tech. students, faculty members and others can have access to it as and when they need. The total floor area of the Library is 3,736.45 sq.ft. It is a excellent reference library for Technical, Educational, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Science, Curriculum Development, Continuing Education, Educational Planning & Management, Community Development and Rural Technology and other related subjects. The total number of various documents available in the Library till date as follows :
A fully equipped Educational Television Studio has been developed, which is being utilized to produce educational video films for Govt. sponsored Gyan Darshan Channel for consumption of all interested teachers and professionals. The studio is attached to the Educational Technology Centre. There are acoustically treated ETV Studio equipped with professional light control unit, on-line two-camera production system having cameras e.g. DXC-637, DXC-D35P, Switcher: DFS 700P etc. in the studio. Moreover, the studio is equipped with post-production editing & sound dubbing facility with equipment such as Video Edit Control Unit- PVE 500, Digital DVCAM Recorder- DSR-2000P, Beta Cam SP Recorder-PVW 2800P and Beta Recorder/ Player UVW- 1800P with A/B Roll facility etc

To act as a center for offering quality training programmes for teachers as per need of the client system, covering the entire gamut of technical, vocational and management education, at regional as also at national levels;
To arrange for practical training for technical teachers in industries on a cooperative education plan;
To undertake systemic research to provide research inputs for development of technical education systems and their management;
To undertake action research for development of innovative methods, processes and practices for improvement of teaching-learning environment in technical and vocational education;
To design new instructional system and strategies for production of multimedia learning materials;
To develop and disseminate learning resources like Textbooks, Laboratory Manuals, Video Programmes, Computer Assisted Instructional Multimedia Packages to technical and vocational institutions and other organizations;
To offer programmes for technical and vocational teachers in distance learning mode using state-of-the-art technologies;
To offer courses/programmes for technical and vocational teachers to suit overseas demand especially SAARC & ASEAN countries;
To collaborate with Community and Industry in organizing Continuing and Non-formal education programmes and providing extension and consultancy services;
