PHARMACEUTICS & PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGY:
Pharmaceutics mainly deals with the development, production and evaluation of pharmaceutical dosage forms. For this, apart from Pharmaceutics certain other disciplines like Physical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Engineering are also integrated. Knowledge of Physical Pharmacy facilitate the preformulation task while during formulation and production, the knowledge of pharmaceutics becomes criticall Pharmaceutical Engineering helps largely in tackling industrial scale production.
Pharmaceutical Chemistry :
The widening world of Pharmaceuticals has resulted in two collateral expansions. First is the drug discovery research and the second is in terms of increase in the number of units and total manufacturing of pharmaceuticals on commercial scale. The second in turn is the direct result of first. The drug discovery therefore occupies a prime place in the world of Pharmaceuticals. In agreement with this, the department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry is considered to be the heart of Pharmacy College and Curriculum.
The past two decades witnessed phenomenal growth in Medicinal Chemistry. Though originated from Organic Chemistry, the subject has reached an enormous level of complexity and encompasses many basic sciences and applied areas including biochemistry, molecular biology, proteomics, genomics and bioinformatics.
Department of Pharmacology was set up as soon as academic activity of Pharmacy College was started in June 1971. Pharmacology is one of the important subjects which deals with detailed study of drugs particularly their actions on living beings, organs or tissues. It includes allied topics like Pharmacodynamics, Pharmacokinetics, Therapeutics, Toxicology, Chemotherapy, Pharmacoepidemiology, PharmacoEconomics and Clinical Pharmacy. Thus, Pharmacology is an important subject which connects pharmacy to medical sciences. Pharmacologists also teach other subjects like anatomy and pathophysiology.
For the undergraduates, Pharmaceutical Analysis is taught from 2nd year onwards along with practicals. As Pharmaceutical Analysis requires analytical instruments, the students are taught extensively the analytical methods and techniques including the application of sophisticated instruments like GC, HPLC, spectroscopic methods like NMR, GC-MS, LC-MS etc. for drugs, pharmaceuticals and others.
