SOPHIA POLYTECHNIC  it is run by the Society for the Higher Education of Women in India (SHEWI), a Trust belonging to the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Polytechnic is part of an international network of Sacred Heart schools and colleges, which share a 200-year old philosophy of education that was promoted by a visionary educationist, Madeleine Sophie Barat, who founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1800 in France.  Sophia Polytechnic is predominantly a women’s polytechnic.  However, male students are admitted to the courses of the HAFT Department as well as in the SCM course.
Sophia Polytechnic is a Christian Minority Institution under Article 30(1) of the Constitution of India. Hence, there is a quota for Christian students in all our courses.  Reservations for Backward Class students are followed as per rules. Though a minority institution, Sophia Polytechnic adheres to secular values and principles.  All are welcome to seek admission to our courses, irrespective of caste or creed.
From its inception in 1970, Sophia Polytechnic has been committed to women’s education, which is perceived to be the means for both personal and societal transformation.  It stands for an education that is holistic and which provides for all-round growth.  The Management is committed to creating an atmosphere in which the zest for learning thrives and students are trained not only to be professionals but also to be persons of convictions and values.  The programmes are student -centered, providing ample opportunity for the development of professional skills, self-assurance and confidence. Through the ‘Sophia Cooverji Hormusji Programme in Ethics and Spirituality’, Sophia Polytechnic provides the opportunity for students to focus on values, ethical living and concern for the underprivileged.  Each year a theme is chosen for the whole institute under this programme.  The theme for the year 2014-15 is ‘Educating to Wholeness’.

Course offered:
B.Sc. in Hospitality Studies
The HAFT programme is one of the oldest and most prestigious courses in hospitality in the city. This DEGREE is recognized by all deluxe hotel chains in India. HAFT provides 3 state-of-the-art kitchens and a bakery, with the latest
equipment, as well as two training restaurants to facilitate learning in a professional environment.

Social Communications Media:
THE SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS MEDIA DEPARTMENT (SCMSophia), conducts a one-year, full-time, integrated post-graduate diploma course in social communications media that is open to forty bright young women and men. The course is affiliated to the University of Mumbai’s Garware Institute of Career Education and Development.

Art & Design:
Immediately after S.S.C. / Std X Board examination and after having passed the Intermediate Drawing Grade Exam, students can enroll for this one year course in Foundation Art. Understanding the basic forms and fundamentals of drawing and designing is given utmost priority in this course. Students are encouraged to explore the relationship between form and function. This course is a pre-requisite for students who further wish to pursue their interest in Applied Art or Textile Designing

Diploma in Applied Art:
This course in Art, Advertising and Graphic Design, is an intensive and creative programme which serves as an effective educational platform for students. They are trained according to the professional ethics of the advertising world all through their four years. And are prepared for professionalism in the world of design and advertising.

Dress Designing & Garment Manufacturing:
The Department has completed 38 years of excellence. An intensive three-year Diploma Course affiliated to the Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra, it covers virtually the entire gamut of the fashion industry – Garment making, Fashion illustration, Fashion Merchandising, Color Theory, Generic Skills and many more.  Moreover, going beyond the designated curriculum, over the years, new subjects, such as, Design Process, Indian Textiles, Styling, Retail & Export Merchandising, Fashion Accessories, Draping, Visual Merchandising have been introduced to enhance the overall quality of the course.
Facilities:
Situated on the ground floor of the Polytechnic building, the air-conditioned library is indeed an oasis of knowledge where the quest of the curious mind ends.  Hand-picked books line the cupboards to supplement lectures of all professional courses offered in our Institute. The Library is replete with special interest magazines, self-help books, industry periodicals and general interest newspapers.  The library stands apart with its open access system and with its unique collection of books on Ethics and Spirituality.  This collection is integral to the motto of the Institute.
The Computer Centre:
The Institute has a computer lab which provides students with technologically advanced equipment for learning and producing comprehensive and finished work for their portfolios. It is well equipped with the latest machines, cable internet service, reference library and above all, has a very helpful faculty.
Audio-Visual & Conference Room:
These are an added advantage for seminars, orientations, functions, conferences etc.   In addition, the Sophia Bhabha Auditorium on campus is readily available when required for larger audiences. There is a photocopying machine in the Institute and a stationery shop on the campus for students’ convenience.
Hostel:
Situated on the fourth floor of the polytechnic, the hostel can accommodate 44 students. Vegetarian and non-vegeterian food is provided. It has a common room where students can relax and entertain themselves. The hostel commands a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea.  Admission is based on a personal interview. The hostel provides a choice of rooms on a sharing basis of 2 or 3 roommates.  Students are allowed to bring in their laptops and internet facility is available.
Canteen:
The Canteen is located on the 2nd floor. It provides a variety of snacks, mini-meals and beverages at reasonable rates. Students meet during their breaks here to relax, share their experiences and enjoy the wholesome food available to them.
Studio:
The Institute provides the photography students with professionally equipped two black and white darkrooms, an air-conditioned digital studio with computer facility. For setting up photo shoots the studio is equipped with a wide range of professional lenses, flash lights, tungsten lights, channel system, huge backgrounds and all bromide papers, films, chemicals required for darkroom work.

Sophia in Greek stands for ‘Wisdom’.   The name ‘Sophia’ is also derived from Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat (or ‘Sophie’ as she was known to her contemporaries).
Established in June 1970, Sophia Polytechnic was founded by Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an international congregation of religious women dedicated to Education.  The Society of the Sacred Heart was founded in 1800 in France by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat.  It was extended to the new world by Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne whom we honour as the patron Saint of our Institute. The Society of the Sacred Heart runs educational institutions in all the five continents.
